Seattle in December: what to expect

Seattle in December is mild, grey and wet rather than cold and snowy. Daytime highs sit near 8 °C (46 °F) and nights near 3 °C (37 °F), with rain on roughly 17–18 days of the month — usually light rain, drizzle or showers rather than a solid downpour. Snow in the city is rare and usually brief; the passes and mountains east of the city get real snow.

The bigger constraint is light. 1 December has about 8.5 hours between sunrise and sunset, 21 December about 8.4, and 31 December about 8.7. Plan outdoor sights for the middle of the day and keep museums, markets and music for the dark hours. Wind off Puget Sound makes the waterfront feel colder than the number suggests.

December splits into two halves. From 1 to about 19 December the city is quiet: museums, the market and the Space Needle are easy, restaurant tables are available, and hotel rates are among the lowest of the year. From about 20 December to 2 January, holiday travel, family visits and New Year's Eve push flights and hotels to their annual peak — the same pattern the country page flags for the US in December.

Book early for that late window, especially airfares into Sea-Tac and downtown hotels. Outside it, this is one of the cheapest months to sleep in Seattle. Expect holiday lights, the market and evening events to be busy on weekends even in the quiet half of the month.

Seattle's December calendar is built around lights, music and the market. Dates shift each year, so confirm before you book anything timed.

Indoor Seattle carries the month. Pike Place Market is covered and busy; the Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of Pop Culture, the Chihuly Garden and Glass and the Space Needle all work in rain. The Central Library and the aquarium are good wet-day stops, and the Underground Tour in Pioneer Square is largely indoors.

For a dry-ish half-day, the waterfront and Olympic Sculpture Park are walkable between showers, and the Washington State Ferries run all year — a Bainbridge Island round trip is a cheap, sheltered way to see the sound. For snow, head to the passes or the Cascades; check road conditions and carry chains where required. Mount Rainier's high roads are closed for the season, so treat it as a snow-and-view trip only if conditions allow.

If you want more daylight and better odds of dry weather, come in spring or summer instead; if you want the holiday version of the city, December is the month.

Pack for wet and cool, not for deep winter. A waterproof shell with a warm mid-layer beats a heavy coat for a city where you move between rain and heated interiors. Waterproof shoes or boots matter more than an umbrella, though a small one is useful. Add gloves, a hat and a scarf for evening events and ferry decks, and a swimsuit only if your hotel has a pool or hot tub.

November is wetter and darker but cheaper and quieter; January is similar to December with fewer events and lower prices after New Year. October is the last month with real autumn colour and more usable daylight, and February starts to stretch the days again while staying cool and damp.
