Seattle in April: what to expect

April sits in Seattle's wet half of the year, but the pattern is shifting: fronts come through less often than in November or December, and the rain usually arrives as light drizzle or a few hours of showers rather than a full day of downpour. Daytime highs land near 15 °C (59 °F) and nights near 6 °C (43 °F), so a light jacket and a hood beat an umbrella in the wind off Puget Sound.

Daylight grows fast — roughly 13 hours by mid-month and close to 14 by the end — which is what makes April work for sightseeing: you can still be outside at 7pm. The mountains are a different story. Snow lingers on the Cascades passes and trails above about 1,000 m are often still under snow, so treat April as a city and lowland month rather than a hiking month.

April is one of the cheaper months to sleep in Seattle. Hotel rates sit well under the July–August peak, and midweek nights in early April are the softest of the spring. The exceptions are the weekends of the Skagit Valley tulip festival and any weekend with a big convention or a Mariners home series, when downtown rooms tighten up.

On the ground, the city is busy but not packed. Pike Place Market is shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning on a Saturday, and the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass draw queues in the middle of the day; go at opening or after 4pm. Weekday mornings in the museums and on the ferries are noticeably calmer.

Seattle's spring calendar is built around flowers and the start of the outdoor season. The University of Washington quad is the classic cherry-blossom stop, usually peaking in the last days of March and the first week or two of April. North of the city, the Skagit Valley tulip fields run through April, with the daffodils first and the tulips following.

On the water, the opening day of boating season and the associated rowing events fall in early May rather than April, so check dates before you plan around them. Baseball returns to T-Mobile Park with the Mariners' home schedule, and the city's festival season proper — Folklife, Bumbershoot and the rest — starts in May and later.

April rewards the lowlands. Pike Place Market, the waterfront and the Olympic Sculpture Park are all walkable and fine in drizzle. The Washington Park Arboretum and the Japanese Garden are at their best with new leaves and blossoms, and the Ballard Locks are worth the trip to watch boats move between the lakes and the sound.

For a wet day, the museums carry the load: the Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of History and Industry, the Chihuly Garden and Glass and the aquarium. Take a ferry to Bainbridge Island for the crossing and a walk through town — the ride is the point, and it works in any weather. If you want a day trip, the San Juan Islands and Mount Rainier are both possible but weather-dependent in April: check road and trail conditions before committing.

Pack for wet and cool, not cold. A waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, jeans or quick-drying trousers and shoes that can take a puddle cover almost every April day. An umbrella is optional — the rain is often light and wind-driven — but a small one costs nothing in a day bag.

Add sunglasses and sunscreen for the bright days between fronts, a refillable water bottle, and a swimsuit if your hotel has a pool or hot tub. If you plan to drive to the tulip fields or the mountains, keep a warm layer and check pass conditions before you leave the city.

March is wetter and cooler, with the blossoms just starting and the lowest prices of the spring. May is the better month on paper: drier, warmer, with the tulips finished but the city's festival season beginning and daylight running past 8pm. June is drier still and the start of the busy summer, with prices climbing.

If your dates are flexible and you want the best odds of dry weather, aim for late May or June. If you want the cheapest rooms and the blossoms, April — especially the first half — is the sweet spot.
