Scituate, Massachusetts
Scituate
Go for one night, or as a day trip from Boston: the harbor, lighthouse and beaches fill a half-day; a car is needed beyond Front Street.
Scituate is a small South Shore seacoast town about 30 miles south of Boston, built around Scituate Harbor and its compact Front Street strip of shops and restaurants. The 1810 Scituate Lighthouse on Cedar Point is the main sight, with five public beaches and a handful of historic buildings run by the Scituate Historical Society. Most visitors come for a half-day or a single night; a car opens up the beaches and the villages of North Scituate and Humarock.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Beach parking lots require a town beach sticker; only a limited number are issued to non-residents each summer and they are expensive (about $300). Without one, walk or bike to the beach.
- Humarock Beach is reached only via Marshfield, which can be a slow drive in summer.
- Some historic buildings and seasonal businesses open only on set days or during Heritage Days: check the Scituate Historical Society calendar before you go.
- No clubs or bar-only venues in town; last call is 12:45AM.
A low-crime residential beach town; the real cautions are cold Atlantic water, rip currents and rocky shorelines, plus summer beach-parking rules. 911 for emergencies.
