Schöningen is a small Lower Saxon town on the southeastern edge of the Elm hills, known worldwide for 400,000-year-old wooden spears found in a nearby opencast mine. The finds are the reason to come; the Paläon research and experience centre displays them. The old town around the market square, the castle and St. Lorenz church fills a short walk. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Brunswick, Helmstedt and Wolfenbüttel, or as a base for cycling and hiking in the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park.
