Schneverdingen
Base here 1–2 nights only if you want the heath on foot or by bike; otherwise day-trip from Hamburg (1 h 15 min) or Soltau (20 min).
Schneverdingen is a small heath town 50 km south of Hamburg, known as the Heideblütenstadt (heath-blossom town). The reason to come is the surrounding Lüneburg Heath: purple heather in Aug–Sep, marked walking and cycling trails, and horse-and-cart rides. The town itself is a base with a farm museum, two pools and a weekly market, not a sightseeing destination. One night covers it; two if you want a full day on the trails.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk. Buses run around town and a shuttle runs into the heath; check current timetables locally. Bikes are the practical way to reach the trails and outlying farm hotels — rent from your hotel or a local shop. A car helps for the wider heath, Soltau and Hamburg.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Heath shuttle and rural bus services are limited outside the bloom season: check times before you rely on them.
- Many restaurants close one or two days a week and stop serving by 21:00–22:30: check before you go.
- Heather bloom weekends (late Aug–early Sep) fill hotels and trails: book beds weeks ahead.
- Tick protection on heath trails in summer; stay on marked paths.
A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are rural roads at night, ticks on heath trails in summer and limited late transport — check the last bus before you go out.
