Schliersee
Go for 1–2 nights as a lake-and-mountain base 50 min by train from Munich; skip as a day trip only if you want the Spitzingsee ski lifts.
Schliersee is a small Bavarian lake town at the edge of the Alps, about 50 km south of Munich. It works as a low-key alternative to Tegernsee: one lake with a year-round boat, a cable car to a 1,061 m alp, an open-air museum of old Bavarian farm life, and the Spitzingsee ski area 10 km up the valley. Most travellers come for a night or two of hiking or skiing, not for a city break.

Get around
The BOB train from Munich stops at Schliersee and Fischhausen-Neuhaus roughly hourly. Local RVO buses link the village, the south shore and Spitzingsee. The lake boat calls at Vitalwelt, Wörth island, Fischhausen and Seestraße about hourly while the lake is ice-free. A car helps for Spitzingsee and side valleys; parking in the village is limited in summer.

- Many hotels and guesthouses close in November and again in late spring; book ahead in ski season and in August.
- Card payment is common in the village but not universal at farm shops and mountain huts: carry some cash.
Very safe for a small resort town. The real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trails above the tree line, cold water in the lake, and ice on the lakeside path in winter.
