Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's northernmost state, between the North Sea and the Baltic, with a Danish border to the north. It is flat, maritime and short on big cities: Lübeck's old town and Kiel's harbour are the two urban anchors, the North Sea mudflats are a UNESCO site, and the Baltic and North Frisian islands are the beach draw. Trains reach most towns from Hamburg in 45–90 minutes, so it works as a 2–3 night add-on to Hamburg rather than a standalone week.
