Schaffhausen

Base here 1 night for the Rhine Falls and the old town; the falls need half a day, the town half a day, and Zurich is 57 min by train.

Schaffhausen is Switzerland's northernmost city-canton, on the Rhine next to the German border. Travellers come for the Rhine Falls, Europe's largest waterfall, 4 km downstream, and stay for a compact Renaissance old town with a hilltop fortress. One night is enough; two if you want the falls plus Stein am Rhein without rushing. Zurich is under an hour by S-Bahn, so it also works as a day trip.

Get around

The old town is small and pedestrianised; walk it. Local buses (vbsh) run every 20 min, more often at peak, and a day ticket costs about CHF 10. Trains reach the falls in two stops from Schaffhausen station.
