Sayula

Give Sayula one night, two at most: a Pueblo Mágico of 28,000 people where the plaza, two colonial churches and a knife forge fill a half-day.

Sayula is a small colonial town in southern Jalisco, about 100 km and just under 3 h by first-class bus from Guadalajara. It is a Pueblo Mágico and the birthplace of writer Juan Rulfo. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the draw is the slow plaza life, the churches and the Laguna de Sayula wetland, not a checklist of sights. Most travellers use it as a quiet stop between Guadalajara, Mazamitla and Colima.

Get around

Walk the Centro: plaza, churches, market and knife workshop are within about 15 minutes on foot. Yellow-and-white taxis wait at sitios by the main plaza for anything further; ride-hailing apps are of little use in a town this size.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Carnaval (late Feb–early Mar) and the 4–12 Dec Guadalupe pilgrimage fill the plaza with parades, fireworks and drinking: book ahead or avoid if you want quiet.
  • Summer afternoons bring heavy rain; carry a light rain jacket Jun–Sep.
  • The bus terminal is small and crowded with no proper loading bay: keep bags close.
  • Uber and similar apps are effectively unavailable; agree the taxi fare before you get in.

Sayula is a small, calm town and the Centro is fine on foot by day and early evening. Use normal big-country caution after dark, keep to lit streets around the plaza, take taxis rather than walking far at night, and check current Jalisco state advice before travelling.
