Savonlinna

Go for 2 nights in July for the opera and a castle; outside June–August most cruises and the festival are gone, so treat it as a quiet stop.

Savonlinna is a small Lakeland city built on islands in Lake Saimaa, 335 km east of Helsinki. Its reason to visit is Olavinlinna, a 15th-century castle, plus summer lake cruises and the July opera festival. Two nights covers the castle, a cruise and a day trip; outside summer the town is calm and much of the boat traffic stops.

Get around

The centre sits on islands and is walkable: market square to Olavinlinna is about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses reach the suburbs and Kerimäki; a route planner and the Matkahuolto Routes and Tickets app cover tickets. Taxis run via app or phone. A car helps for national parks and Kerimäki.

  • Most cruises and the opera festival run June–August only; check dates before booking travel.
  • Olavinlinna opening hours change by season and parts of the interior are guided-tour only.
  • The Kerimäki train stop is 14 km from Kerimäki village with no easy onward transport without a pre-booked taxi.

Very safe. The real risks are cold water if you swim or paddle, slippery castle stairs, and thin ice in winter: never walk on lake ice without local guidance.
