Where to stay in Savannah: best neighborhoods and hotels

If this is your first time in Savannah and you are here for two or three nights, book inside the Historic District. Almost everything you came for — the squares, the riverfront, the house museums, the restaurants — sits within a 25-minute walk, and you will not need a car.

Pick a different base only for a specific reason: a lower nightly rate, free parking, a bigger room, or the beach. The trade-off is always the same — you either walk or you drive and hunt for parking.

The Historic District covers roughly Bay Street down to Gaston Street and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard across to East Broad Street. Inside it you get the squares, Forsyth Park at the southern edge, the riverfront at the northern edge, and most of the city's restaurants. Streets are laid out on a grid with frequent small parks, so walking is easy and flat.

Two sub-areas matter. The riverfront and Bay Street put you closest to the water, the cobblestones and the bars — convenient, but the loudest at night. The squares south of Broughton Street, around Chippewa, Madison and Lafayette squares, are quieter, greener and still 10–15 minutes from the river on foot.

Expect boutique inns, converted townhouses and the big chain hotels near Bay Street. Rooms in the oldest buildings can be small, with window air units and thin walls; ask about the floor and whether the room faces the street.

South of Forsyth Park, the Victorian District has the same architecture at lower prices. You are 15–25 minutes on foot from the busiest part of downtown, and the walk down Bull Street through the park is one of the better parts of the day. This is a good compromise if you want to walk everywhere but not pay riverfront rates.

Starland, further south around Bull and 40th streets, is the food-and-bar end of town, with a younger crowd and more short-term rentals. It is a 25–35 minute walk to the historic core, or a short rideshare. If you plan to eat out late and do not mind a car or app rides, it is the best value inside the city.

Midtown and the Southside along Abercorn Street and I-95 are where the chain hotels, larger rooms and free parking are. You will drive or take a rideshare into the Historic District, typically 10–20 minutes depending on traffic. This suits families, road-trippers arriving late off the interstate, and anyone staying a week or more.

Check the parking terms before booking: free parking is the main reason to be out here, and some properties charge for it anyway. Also check whether the hotel runs a shuttle; some do, on a fixed schedule.

Tybee Island is the beach option, about 25–35 minutes by car from downtown Savannah. Stay here if the beach is the point of the trip, or if you want a quieter base and are happy to drive in for dinner. Summer weekends fill early and rates rise; spring and autumn are cheaper and still warm enough for the sand.

If you are combining Savannah with the Georgia coast, Tybee works as a two-night add-on rather than a base for sightseeing in the city.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a standard double room in high season, before taxes and any resort or parking fee. Savannah adds sales tax and a local hotel tax on top of the quoted rate, so the final bill is higher than the headline number.

Hostel dorms and budget motels on the edge of downtown are the cheapest beds. Mid-range means a chain hotel in Midtown or a small inn away from the river. The top band is riverfront rooms, historic inns and anything with a courtyard or balcony.

Decide about a car before you book. If you stay in the Historic District you can leave the car at the hotel and walk all weekend, but you will pay to park it. If you stay in Midtown, parking is usually free and you drive in — check where you will leave the car downtown, because street meters run seven days a week and lots fill on event nights.

Ask about stairs and lifts in historic buildings, and about street noise if the room faces Bay Street or River Street. For a first visit of two nights, the Historic District is worth the extra cost; for four nights or more, a cheaper base plus rideshares often works out similar.
