Best tours in Savannah: walking, food and day tours

Savannah rewards a guide for one specific reason: the grid of squares, lanes and brick walls is easy to walk but hard to read. A licensed guide tells you which building survived the 1820 fire, which square was a duelling ground, and where the film crews shoot. After that, you can walk the same streets alone and notice more.

For a first visit, take one walking tour of the Historic District in the morning, when the light is soft and the streets are quiet. Add a food tour if you would rather not research restaurants yourself — it doubles as a lunch and a shortlist. Trolley and bus loops are worth it mainly if you are travelling with someone who cannot manage two hours on foot, or in July and August when the heat index climbs.

Ghost tours and pub crawls are evening entertainment, not history. They run late, they are easy to book on the day, and quality varies by guide more than by company. Treat them as a night out with stories attached.

Most walking tours leave between 9am and 11am and again around 2pm, and last about 90 minutes. Food tours usually run once or twice a day, often starting late morning or mid-afternoon, and last around three hours with five or six tasting stops. Trolley loops start early and run into the evening, and a ticket is normally valid for one or two days of hopping on and off.

Expect to pay a deposit or the full amount online. Cancellation windows are commonly 24 hours, and food tours often need 48 hours because the restaurants pre-order. Cash is rarely needed, but a few dollars for the guide is standard in the US.

Two costs catch people out. First, gratuity: US$5–10 per person on a walking tour is normal, more on a food tour. Second, drinks: pub crawls and some food tours charge alcohol separately.

Almost every tour meets in or beside the Historic District, within a 10–20 minute walk of the riverfront hotels and the main B&B blocks. Meeting points are usually a square, a visitor centre or a specific corner, and operators send the exact spot by email after booking. Arrive 10 minutes early; guides leave on time and latecomers are not always chased.

Savannah is a walking city for this purpose. Parking near the Historic District is limited and paid, so if you are driving in, park once for the day and walk between the meeting point and your next stop. Rideshare drop-offs work well for evening ghost tours when you would rather not walk back in the dark.

If you are basing yourself outside the centre, check the walk from your accommodation before you book a 9am departure — a 25-minute walk in July heat changes the plan.

Pick the tour by what you want to know, not by the vehicle. A history walking tour and a ghost tour cover overlapping streets and tell completely different stories; doing both on the same day feels repetitive.

Ask about group size before booking. A 12-person walking tour is a conversation; a 30-person one is a lecture with a microphone. Smaller groups cost more and are usually worth it for first-time visitors.

In summer, choose the earliest slot and carry water. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June to September, and operators rarely cancel for rain — bring a light rain jacket rather than an umbrella, which is awkward in a crowd.
