Voykit pocket guide · Australia
Sassafras
Go for one night, not a day trip: 50 min by car from Melbourne, and the tearooms, gardens and cottages need a slow morning.
Sassafras is a small Dandenong Ranges village on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, about an hour east of Melbourne. It is a base for cool-climate forest walks, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden and the villages of Olinda and Belgrave, not a sightseeing town in itself. One night covers it; two if you want a full day in the forest.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the village strip is walkable, but the gardens, Olinda and Belgrave are 5–15 min by road. Bus 688 (Olinda–Belgrave via Sherbrooke Road) and bus 694 (Croydon–Upper Ferntree Gully via Olinda and Tremont) link the villages; services are infrequent, so check timetables before you rely on them. Public transport needs a Myki card.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Mountain Road is winding and can be foggy or icy in winter; drive slowly and watch for cyclists.
- Mobile coverage is patchy in the gullies; Optus data has been reported to drop out around Kallista.
- Many tearooms and shops close by late afternoon; plan lunch rather than a late dinner.
- Weekend parking on the strip fills by mid-morning in spring and autumn.
Very safe. The real risks are wildlife on the road at dusk, wet or icy bends in winter, and bushfire on hot, windy summer days: check the fire danger rating before any forest walk.
