Sarnath is where the Buddha taught his first sermon, 10–13 km north-east of Varanasi, and it is one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The ruins, the Dhamek Stupa and the museum fit into a half-day; sleeping here instead of Varanasi buys quiet and green space, at the cost of a 30–60 min run for dinner and the ghats.

Scams and watch-outs

- The museum closes on Fridays; the site ticket does not cover it.
- Auto and taxi drivers at Varanasi Junction approach you on the platform: walk outside and negotiate there.
- Summer heat and monsoon flooding are real; carry water and start early.
Sarnath itself is calm and walkable; the friction is transport pricing and touts at Varanasi Junction. Agree fares first, buy site tickets at the official office, and treat the ruins as an active religious site.
