Sarina
Stop 2–3 hours for the Sugar Shed and a meal, or sleep one night if you are breaking the Bruce Highway drive; do not build a trip around Sarina.
Sarina is a small sugar town of about 5,500 people on the Bruce Highway, 32 km south of Mackay and roughly 300 km north of Rockhampton. It exists for travellers as a fuel, food and leg-stretch stop, with one paid attraction that justifies getting out of the car: the Sarina Sugar Shed. Two hours covers the town; a night only makes sense if you are splitting a long drive.

- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Long drives on the Bruce Highway: fatigue, road trains and wildlife at dawn and dusk are the real risks.
- Wet season (roughly Dec–Mar) can close roads and flood low crossings: check Queensland road conditions before driving.
- The Sarina Museum has been closed for redevelopment: confirm it is open before planning around it.
- Fuel and food options thin out north and south of town: fill up here.
Sarina is a quiet country town and feels safe day and night. The genuine risks are on the road: long Bruce Highway drives, road trains, wildlife at dawn and dusk, and wet-season flooding.
