Sarawak is Malaysia's largest state and the least visited: jungle interior, river towns and longhouse country on Borneo. Almost everyone starts in Kuching, the capital, which has the airport, the riverfront and Bako and Semenggoh within day-trip range. Distances are the constraint — Kuching to Miri is about an hour by plane but 14 hours by road — so pick one or two bases and fly between them rather than trying to loop the state by bus.

Coast and Kuching: Equatorial: hot and humid all year, rain in most months. November to February is typically the wettest stretch, with rougher sea crossings; the rest of the year is mixed.
Interior highlands: Cooler at altitude; small-aircraft flights and river levels are weather-dependent, so build in a spare day.

There is no bad month for Kuching, but the Nov–Feb monsoon is the wettest; Mulu and longhouse trips are best in the drier middle of the year.
