Saratov is a Volga provincial centre of about 840,000 people, once Russia's third-largest city. Its draw is the river itself — up to 3 km wide at the Cosmonauts' Embankment — plus a walkable central spine of pedestrian street, parks, a covered market and Russia's first public art gallery. Sights are low-key and cheap; most travellers pass through by rail or on a summer Volga cruise.

Trams, buses, trolleybuses and marshrutka minibuses cover the city; the main hub is around Mirnyy Pereulok at the top of Prospekt Stolypina. Fares are paid to a conductor or the driver, roughly RUB 30–40 (2026 estimate, check). Yandex Go and similar apps give a fixed price and work in English. The centre is walkable; the terrain rises steeply away from the river.
