Sarasota
Give Sarasota 2–3 nights: one full beach day on Siesta Key, one for the Ringling estate, one for downtown. A car is close to essential.
Sarasota is a mid-sized Gulf Coast city that behaves like a small cultural capital: a serious art museum, an opera and theatre scene, and white-quartz beaches on three barrier keys. Downtown, the Ringling estate and the keys are 15–30 minutes apart by car, so most visitors base themselves once and drive. Two nights covers the highlights; three lets you add a beach day without rushing.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the keys, the Ringling estate and the airport are 10–30 min apart and buses are slow. Rideshare works downtown and on Siesta Key but thins out late. Bikes and scooters cover the keys; the Legacy Trail is a paved rail-trail for longer rides.

- Downtown Sarasota
- Walkable to restaurants, Selby Gardens and the bayfront; 15–20 min drive to Siesta Key. Best for a short stay without a beach view.
- Siesta Key
- Walk to the sand; village bars and cafés. Higher rates in season and traffic on the Stickney Point bridge at sunset.
- Lido Key and St. Armands Circle
- Between downtown and the beach; shops and restaurants on the circle, quieter than Siesta.
- Longboat Key
- Resort and condo strip north of St. Armands; car needed for everything, calmest option.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Afternoon thunderstorms Jun–Sep; plan beach mornings.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov: check forecasts and evacuation zones if a storm is named.
- Siesta Key parking fills by mid-morning in season; the free trolley runs the length of the key.
- Red tide can close beaches and irritate airways on some Gulf days: check the state daily beach report.
- Sun is strong year-round: shade and water, not just sunscreen.
Sarasota is a low-crime city by US standards; the real risks are heat, rip currents on the Gulf beaches, and drinking on the keys without a plan to get back. Swim near lifeguards, lock valuables out of sight in the car, and check the daily red-tide and surf reports.
