Saranac Lake
Two nights is enough: one for the village and Lake Flower, one for a lake or mountain day. Come for Winter Carnival or fall colour, not mud season.
Saranac Lake is a village of about 5,400 people inside Adirondack Park, built on tuberculosis-cure history and now a base for paddling, hiking and winter events. It is quieter and cheaper than Lake Placid, 11 km away, and most of it is walkable. Two nights covers the village; add nights if you want lake time.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: NY 86 and NY 3 ice up; carry snow tyres or chains and check conditions.
- Cell signal drops on back roads and trails; download offline maps before you leave the village.
- Black flies and mosquitoes in late spring and early summer; bring repellent.
- Some restaurants close early or seasonally outside summer and winter carnival weeks.
- Cash-only bars exist; ask before you order.
Very safe for a US village: the real risks are winter driving, cold exposure on hikes and thin cell coverage. Tell someone your trail plan and carry layers even in summer.
