São Tomé by district
The town runs in a strip along the bay. The civic centre (cathedral, palace square) sits mid-bay; the market quarter is a short way east toward the fort; and the waterfront road (the Marginal) runs north-west toward the hotels and the airport road. All are flat, and each is a 5–15 minute walk from the next by day.
About these names
This guide uses four small walking areas rather than formal neighbourhoods; local neighbourhood names (bairros) are used by taxi drivers, so give a landmark such as the cathedral or the market.
