São Paulo is Brazil's largest city and its food, art and nightlife capital — 12.1 million people in the city, about 21.3 million in the metro area, and the biggest Japanese, Italian and Arab communities outside their home countries. It is not a beach or a postcard city: the payoff is restaurants, museums, street art and clubs, spread across districts that each feel like a different town. Most travellers give it 2–3 nights between Rio and Iguaçu, or as a flight hub.

Scams and watch-outs
- Street crime is opportunistic: phone snatching on Avenida Paulista, in República and on crowded buses. Keep the phone in a pocket, not in your hand.
- Do not walk the Downtown streets (República, Sé, Luz, Santa Ifigênia) after dark; take a taxi or ride-hailing car door to door.
- Summer downpours (Dec–Feb) flood underpasses and the Tietê and Pinheiros margins; avoid driving through standing water.
- Card cloning and ATM skimming happen: use bank ATMs inside malls or branches, and cover the keypad.
- If you are robbed, hand over the phone or cash — do not resist.
São Paulo is safer than its reputation for the areas you will actually use, but it is a big city with real street crime: keep the phone out of sight, use ride-hailing at night, and avoid the Downtown streets on foot after dark.
