Northeast, São Paulo: neighborhood guide

Northeast is the northern wedge of São Paulo, made up of 11 districts in four subprefectures: Casa Verde/Cachoeirinha, Santana/Tucuruvi, Tremembé/Jaçanã and Vila Maria/Vila Guilherme. It began as farmland owned by families such as the Baruels, whose 19th-century buildings still stand between later apartment blocks. From the 19th century the Bandeiras Bridge tied the area to Downtown, and Santana grew into its residential and commercial centre.

Santana holds most of the region's hotels, restaurants and nightlife, plus the metro stations. The rest is a mix of working residential districts and, to the north, the steep green edge of the Serra da Cantareira. Around 1.35 million people live in the region, so it is a real neighbourhood rather than a tourist quarter.

Two things pull visitors here: events and nature. Anhembi Park is a 400,000 m² events area, and the city's Carnival parade takes place in the Sambadrome on its edge. Cantareira State Park, one of the largest urban forests anywhere, offers hiking and Atlantic rainforest within the city limits.

Choose Northeast if your trip is built around an event at Anhembi or Expo Center Norte, if you want to hike in Cantareira, or if you want quieter, cheaper accommodation and do not mind riding the metro into the centre. Santana is the only part that works well on foot for a visitor.

Skip it if this is your first São Paulo trip and you plan to spend your days around Avenida Paulista, Ibirapuera or the historic centre. The metro ride is short but the area gives you little to walk to in the evening, and the northern districts are hilly and poorly served by rail.

A middle option: stay two or three nights in Santana for an event, then move to Paulista or West Side for the rest of the trip.

Santana concentrates almost all of the region's restaurants and bars. Expect Brazilian staples — churrasco, pizza, pastel and lanches — plus Japanese and Northeast Brazilian (nordestino) cooking from migrants who settled here. The area is not a destination dining district, so treat meals as convenient rather than a reason to come.

For a night out, the streets around Santana and the Campo de Bagatelle area have the densest cluster of bars. On event nights, places near Anhembi fill early and prices rise; eat before you go or book ahead.

Line 1 (Blue) is the backbone: Santana and Tucuruvi stations sit in the region and run straight through Downtown and on to South Central. Both are also bus terminals, which is how you reach the districts without rail. From Santana to Sé is roughly 20–25 minutes (check).

By car, the Marginal Tietê links Northeast to the West Side and Far East, and the Corredor Norte-Sul links it to Downtown. A car is the practical way to reach Cantareira; the northern districts are steep and spread out. If you use a hailing app to or from the metro, setting Jardim São Paulo as the stop often costs less than Santana or Tucuruvi, one or two stations further on.

For big events, dedicated buses run from Tietê station to the venues, so public transport usually works. Traffic near Anhembi gets heavy on event days. Guarulhos airport (GRU) is the closer of the two airports; the Tietê long-distance bus terminal is inside the region (check).
