São Luiz do Paraitinga
Go for 1–2 nights if you want a colonial town with no crowds; skip it in February unless Carnival is the reason you came.
A preserved 19th-century coffee town in the Paraíba Valley, rebuilt after the 2010 Paraitinga river flood and declared a national heritage site. The historic centre is small and walkable in half a day; the rest of the trip is Atlantic rainforest — trails and waterfalls in Serra do Mar State Park. It works as a quiet 1–2 night stop between Taubaté and the coast, or as a Carnival and Festa do Divino destination when the streets fill.

Get around
The historic centre is flat and small: everything on foot in 10–20 minutes. For Serra do Mar trails and waterfalls you need a car or a local guide — several trailheads sit on private land and must be booked ahead. Intercity buses run from Taubaté, roughly hourly on weekdays and less often at weekends; reserve ahead.

- Buses from Taubaté are infrequent, especially at weekends and on holidays: buy your return ticket when you arrive.
- Carnival and Festa do Divino fill the town: book beds weeks ahead or avoid those dates.
- Cards are widely accepted, but small shops and trail fees may be cash only — carry some reais.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are heavy rain and river flooding in summer, long unmarked rainforest trails, and road driving at night on the SP-125. Keep valuables out of sight and use a guide for remote trails.
