São Lourenço da Serra
Day-trip only: half a day at Triângulo Azul Water Park on BR-116, then back to São Paulo. No reason to sleep here.
São Lourenço da Serra is a small municipality of about 12,000 people in the Grande São Paulo region, on the BR-116 (Régis Bittencourt) highway toward Curitiba. Its one draw is Triângulo Azul, a water park at Km 301. There is no town centre worth a walk and almost no visitor lodging, so treat it as a half-day from São Paulo or a stop on the drive south.

Get around
Car or rideshare only, realistically. The park sits directly on BR-116 at Km 301, so you arrive and leave by road; local buses along the highway exist but are infrequent and slow. Driving yourself is cheaper than a round-trip rideshare if you are two or more people.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Triângulo Azul is seasonal and has had dead-link websites: confirm opening dates and hours before you set out.
- BR-116 is a heavy truck route with frequent congestion and accidents; avoid driving it after dark.
- There is little to no visitor accommodation in the municipality itself: plan to return to São Paulo the same day.
Low street-crime risk in a small town, but BR-116 is one of Brazil's deadliest highways: drive it in daylight, keep distance from trucks and do not stop on the shoulder at night.
One and two days
