São Leopoldo
Skip São Leopoldo unless you have a specific reason (German heritage, visiting Unisinos or a cheap bed near Porto Alegre). A half-day covers the town; use it as a transit stop, not a base.
São Leopoldo is an industrial city in the Grande Porto Alegre metro area, founded by German immigrants. Its main draw is the Geological History Museum on the Unisinos campus and the German-inflected food culture. Most travellers pass through on the TRENSURB train between Porto Alegre and Novo Hamburgo rather than stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Train stations can feel unsafe after dark; walk with purpose.
- The Geological History Museum hours are irregular: check the Unisinos website before going.
- Many shops and restaurants close on Sundays.
- Portuguese only in most places; English is rare.
Safer than central Porto Alegre, but petty theft (phone snatching) happens near the train station. Avoid walking alone after dark in the industrial outskirts.
