São José do Norte
Skip unless you have a specific reason: a quiet fishing town reachable by a 15-min ferry from Rio Grande. Half a day is enough to see the waterfront and eat seafood; the beach access and time needed are check.
São José do Norte is a small coastal town in Rio Grande do Sul, across the channel from Rio Grande. It has a long Atlantic beach (Mar Grosso) and sits on the edge of the Lagoa dos Patos. The town is quiet, with a few seafood restaurants and a working ferry. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from the southern beaches or use it as a short stop from Rio Grande.
