Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is a morning city: do the Zona Colonial's stone streets before 11:00, spend the midday heat indoors, and go anywhere after dark by car door to door.

The Zona Colonial is the walled old core of the capital, a grid of stone streets, churches and forts a few minutes from the river. It is hot and humid most of the year, the pavements are narrow, and the sights are open on short, changing hours. The trips that go wrong are the noon walks in the sun, the taxi hailed on the street, and a phone held out by the road side. Four clusters cover a first visit: the Zona Colonial, Calle El Conde, the Malecón sea-front and Gazcue. The beaches are a separate trip from one kept bed.

SDQ to the Zona Colonial: one app car or booked driver to the door, 30–75 minutes depending on traffic; the risk is not the ride but a street-hailed taxi and a hotel door that is hard to find after dark.

Walk inside a cluster; ride-hailing car between clusters.

Passes

A simple comedor serving the plate of the day (la bandera: rice, beans and meat): go 12:00–14:00 and share a table with office workers.

Terrace restaurants with shade and a view of the Alcázar: a longer lunch table in the hottest hours; book on weekends.

Quieter nights in older houses and mid-size hotels with a door the car can reach; a short car ride to the Zona Colonial.

First-timers: a hotel inside the old city with a 24-hour desk, so the sights are a short walk in the morning; arrange where the car can stop.

Language

Spanish, spoken fast with dropped final letters. Resort staff speak English; elsewhere a few Spanish phrases help a lot.

  • '¿Qué lo que?' is the Dominican 'what's up'.
  • 'Ahorita' can mean now, soon or much later.

  • Greeting: Handshake; kiss on the cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping hellos
  • Dress: Long trousers in offices, churches, some clubs; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
  • Time: Allow flexibility; avoid: Expecting punctual starts socially
  • Dominoes: Watch and ask to join; avoid: Interrupting a game

Red lines

  • Churches and the Pantheon: cover shoulders and knees; quiet inside.
  • Do not accept unofficial guides who approach you in the plazas; book through your hotel or the museum desk.
  • Do not walk the Malecón or the side streets of the Zona Colonial after dark; take a car door to door.

  • Paid e-Ticket lookalike sites: Use eticket.migracion.gob.do only; it is free.
  • Timeshare pitches and 'free' tours: Decline; do not sign anything on holiday.
  • Fake tour tickets: Book Saona and whale trips through licensed operators.
  • Card skimming: Use bank ATMs; keep the card in sight.
  • Motorbike bag snatch: Bag on the wall side; phone away at kerbs.
