Santiniketan is a small university town in Birbhum, West Bengal, built around the school Rabindranath Tagore started in 1901 and the Visva-Bharati University he founded in 1921. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Visitors come for the Tagore houses, the Kala Bhavana art collection, the Kantha-stitch workshops and the seasonal festivals. Two nights covers it; the town is compact enough to walk.

Get around
Electric rickshaws (ṭōṭō) are the cheapest and easiest way to move between the campus, Bolpur and Prantik; cycle rickshaws cost more. The town is compact — most of the campus sights are a 10–20 min walk apart. Hired cars are not always available on demand, so arrange one through your hotel for day trips.

Santiniketan is a calm, walkable university town and generally safe for tourists, including solo women in daylight. The real issues are rickshaw touts near the museum, unlit lanes after dark, and the summer heat — carry water and start early.
