Santiago

Santiago is a metro-and-hills city: do the centre and the two hills in the morning, eat a long lunch, and keep evenings to Lastarria and Bellavista, where you can walk back to a lit street.

Santiago's sights are close together along the Metro, with the Andes behind. The trips that go wrong are about timing and air: smog in winter, summer afternoon heat, and the hill funicular closing in high wind. Four clusters cover a first visit; Valparaíso and the wine valleys are day trips from one kept bed.

Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL)
SCL to Lastarria: one official taxi or pre-booked transfer, 40–80 minutes depending on traffic; the risk is unofficial drivers in the hall and rush-hour traffic on the highway.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster; Metro between clusters in daytime; ride-hailing or a taxi late at night.

Passes
No pass: a Bip! card covers Metro and buses; a short ride by car is cheap.
Late at night
The Metro closes late in the evening: check the closing time at a station and plan a car after it.

See and do

    Take the funicular up in the morning for the Andes view and the Virgin statue; smog and cloud hide the view, and queues grow on weekends.

    The best museum stop in the centre: two hours of pre-Columbian art from across the Americas, indoors and step-free; check the closing day before you go.

    The tallest tower in Latin America: go 60 minutes before sunset on a clear day, book a timed ticket, and skip it in smog or cloud.

    A small hill-park with stairs, fountains and a view of the centre: go mid-morning in daylight, allow 45 minutes, and do not go after dark.

Eat

Emporio La Rosa
An ice-cream and coffee café on Merced in Lastarria: a good mid-afternoon stop after Cerro Santa Lucía; expect a short queue at the counter.
Mercado Central
The fish market with sit-down seafood counters: go at 12:30–14:00, ignore the waiters who call you in from the aisle, and pick a counter with a printed menu.

Sleep

Lastarria
First-timers: walkable to the hill, cafés and the Metro; choose a hotel on or just off Lastarria with a 24-hour desk, and use a car at night from the door.
Providencia
Quieter and more upmarket: wide sidewalks, malls and the Metro at the door, and the Sky Costanera nearby; a ride from the old centre.

Language

Chilean Spanish is fast, drops endings and is full of slang ('po', 'cachai', 'weón'). English is used in Patagonia and San Pedro tourism.

  • 'Po' (from 'pues') ends many phrases; 'al tiro' means right away.
  • WhatsApp for bookings and tours.

  • Nature: Carry out rubbish; avoid: Leaving trails or lighting fires

  • Do not carry your passport in a back pocket: keep a copy and the original in the hotel safe.

  • Phone snatching: Phones off tables; use inside.
  • Car break-ins: Leave nothing visible.

  • Taxi airport touts: Official counters or app pickup zones.
