Santiago airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Four realistic ways out of SCL: official taxi, pre-booked transfer, airport bus plus Metro, or an app car from a designated zone. The choice turns on arrival time, luggage and how much you value a door-to-door ride.

Prices below are 2026 estimates in Chilean pesos. Traffic on the Costanera Norte and the city approach can double the road time at rush hour (roughly 07:30–09:30 and 18:00–20:00 on weekdays).

The official taxi desks inside the arrivals hall sell a fixed fare to a city address, which removes the meter argument. You pay at the desk, get a voucher, and a driver takes you to the car. This is the simplest option after a long flight, and the price is agreed before you move.

Pre-booked transfers work the same way but are arranged online before you fly, usually with a driver waiting in arrivals holding a name sign. They cost a little more and are worth it if you land after midnight or are heading to a specific hotel in Providencia, Las Condes or Bellavista.

Ignore anyone in the arrivals hall who approaches you offering a ride. Walk to the official desk or the marked rank outside.

Airport buses run from outside the terminal to several points in the city, including Metro stations on Line 1. You buy a ticket from the counter or the driver, ride 30–50 minutes depending on traffic, then switch to the Metro for the last leg. This is the cheapest route and works well in daylight with a backpack.

The Metro needs a Bip! card, sold and topped up at station machines. Fares sit around CLP 800–900 (check). Trains are fast and clean but packed at rush hour, and the system closes overnight, so a late arrival should not count on it.

If your hotel is near Line 1 (Providencia, Baquedano, Universidad Católica), the bus-plus-Metro combination is often as quick as a taxi in peak traffic.

Uber, Cabify and DiDi all operate in Santiago, and city trips typically run CLP 4,000–15,000. At the airport, pickups are restricted to set zones rather than the kerb outside arrivals, so follow the app's pin and expect a short walk with your bags.

App fares to the centre usually land below the official taxi desk price, but surge pricing at peak times can erase that. You need working mobile data on arrival; an eSIM set up before you fly avoids hunting for a local SIM in the terminal.

Budget CLP 2,000–3,000 plus a Metro fare for the cheapest trip, CLP 15,000–30,000 for an app car, and CLP 20,000–35,000 for the official taxi desk. A pre-booked transfer with a meet-and-greet sits at the top of the range.

Tipping is not expected for drivers on a fixed airport fare. For a pre-booked transfer, CLP 5,000–15,000 a day is the local norm for guides and drivers if you use them beyond the airport run.

Cards are widely accepted at the official desks and in the apps; keep some pesos in cash for the bus and for the Bip! card machine.
