Santiago de los Caballeros
Half a day to a full day: see the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración and Centro León, eat lunch, then move on. Not a base for the north coast.
Santiago de los Caballeros is the Dominican Republic's second city, a transport hub and a cultural centre with a handful of worthwhile sights. Most travellers use it as a stop between Santo Domingo and the north coast beaches (Puerto Plata, Sosúa, Cabarete) or as a day trip from the coast. The city itself can be seen in half a day; one night is enough if you want to eat well and see the evening scene around the Monument.

Get around
Conchos (shared vans, DOP 15) and motoconchos (motorcycle taxis, DOP 20) are the cheapest options but chaotic. Taxis cost about DOP 150 for a short ride. Walking works for the centre and the Monument area. Gua-guas connect to nearby towns.
