Santiago Atitlán
Stay 1–2 nights if you want Maya town life over lake views; day-trippers from Panajachel get the church, market and Maximón in about 4 hours.
Santiago Atitlán is the largest Tz'utujil Maya town on Lake Atitlán and the least touristy of the main villages: a working market town with a 16th-century church, a yearly-moving Maximón shrine and quetzal forest above it. It sits in an inlet, so you get Volcán San Pedro across the water rather than the wide lake panorama. Come for culture and birding, not for a resort.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Santiago–San Pedro road has had armed robberies of vehicles in past years; ask locally before driving it.
- Do not walk in the hills or to Mirador Rey Tepepul at dusk or after dark.
- Use a guide for quetzal trails: they are unmarked and steep.
- Drunk men and loose dogs on the streets are a nuisance at night.
