Sant'Agnello
Skip Sant'Agnello as a base unless you want a quieter, cheaper alternative to Sorrento: one night is enough to see the town and use it as a launch for Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
Sant'Agnello is a small town on the Sorrento Peninsula, between Sorrento and Piano di Sorrento. It lacks Sorrento's crowds and prices, but also its direct ferry connections and nightlife. Most travellers use it as a budget-friendly sleep base for day trips to Capri, Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast. The town itself has a baroque church, a few restaurants and a gelateria worth a detour, but no major sights that demand a full day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Circumvesuviana trains can be crowded and delayed; check the last train time to avoid being stranded.
- ZTL (limited traffic zones) in Sorrento and other old towns: do not drive into them.
- Many restaurants close for a midday break (14:00–16:00) and on Sundays.
- Sant'Agnello has no direct ferry to Capri; you need to go to Sorrento port (5 min by train or 20 min walk).
Sant'Agnello is very safe. The main risks are pickpocketing on crowded Circumvesuviana trains and traffic on the coastal road. Keep valuables secure and watch for scooters.
