Santa Tecla
Base here 1–2 nights if you want San Salvador's museums and El Boquerón without the capital's traffic; skip it if you came for surf or volcanoes.
Santa Tecla sits 13 km west of central San Salvador, on the road up to El Boquerón and the Panamerican highway. Its draw is Paseo El Carmen: a few blocks of bars, cafés and restaurants that close to cars on weekend evenings. Downtown keeps a small grid of older houses and a handful of sights. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper bed for the capital and the volcano, not as a destination in itself.

Get around
Walk inside the centre: Paseo El Carmen and the streets around Daniel Hernández Park are 10–15 minutes apart on foot. Radio taxis and Uber cover the rest; ask your hotel to call a radio taxi rather than hailing on the street. Buses run to San Salvador and neighbouring towns but are slow in rush hour.

Scams and watch-outs
- La hora pica (roughly 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–19:00) can turn the 15-min drive from San Salvador into 40 min.
- Keep phones and cameras out of sight in downtown streets and on buses.
- Street food is fine for most stomachs but not for everyone; peel fruit and drink bottled water if you are unsure.
- Paseo El Carmen is liveliest and safest on weekend evenings when it is closed to traffic; other nights are quieter.
Santa Tecla is generally calmer than central San Salvador and Paseo El Carmen is patrolled on weekend nights, but this is still a city: keep phones out of sight, use radio taxis or Uber after dark, and avoid empty downtown streets late.
