Santa Maria di Leuca
Stay 2 nights if you want sea caves and the lighthouse; 1 night if you are driving the Salento coast and only need the southern tip.
Santa Maria di Leuca is the southernmost village of Puglia, where the Ionian and Adriatic meet under a 48 m lighthouse. It is small, walkable in an hour, and best used as a 1–2 night base for sea caves, boat trips and the coastal drive between Gallipoli and Otranto. It is a summer place: outside June–September much of the seafront shuts.

Get around
On foot. The village is small and the promenade, port and sanctuary are all within a 15-minute walk; the sanctuary sits above a 284-step staircase from the harbour. A car helps for the coast in both directions and the Ionian caves. Streets are one-way and parking on the boardwalk is effectively impossible in summer — park a few blocks north and pay the meter.

- Many hotels and restaurants close outside the summer season.
Crime is not the issue here — the sea is. The coast is rocky and awkward to walk on; buy sea shoes, keep an eye on your bag when you swim, and treat boat rental past Punta Meliso with care.
