Base in Puerto Ayora for 3–4 nights: land-based Galápagos, cheaper than a cruise, with Tortuga Bay and the Darwin station on foot.
Santa Cruz holds Puerto Ayora, the archipelago's biggest town and its only real tourist base. Fly into Baltra, cross the Itabaca channel, and you have hotels, restaurants, the Charles Darwin Research Station and Tortuga Bay within walking distance. It is the practical onshore alternative to a cruise: 3–4 nights covers the town, the highlands and one or two boat days.

Get around
Puerto Ayora is walkable. White pickup taxis cover town and the highlands; water taxis ($1) link the dock to Las Grietas and Punta Estrada. The only paved road runs from the Itabaca channel to Puerto Ayora, served by buses and shared pickups.

- Morning buses from Puerto Ayora to the Itabaca channel run every 30 min, roughly 07:00–09:00; afternoon flights need a taxi ($25) or shared taxi ($9 pp).
- Galápagos entry needs a transit control card and park fee; buy before or at the airport and keep cash.
Puerto Ayora is calm and walkable; the real risks are the sea (strong undertow at Tortuga Bay, rough inter-island boats), sun and dehydration, and cash running out before the ATM limit does.
