Santa Cruz do Sul
Give it 1–2 nights, and only in October for Oktoberfest or July for ENART; outside those weeks it is a half-day stop between Porto Alegre and the Serras Gaúchas.
Santa Cruz do Sul is a German-Brazilian town of about 130,000 people in central Rio Grande do Sul, roughly 150 km from Porto Alegre. Its two festivals — Oktoberfest in October and ENART, the state's gaúcho culture meet — fill every bed in the region. The rest of the year the draw is a very large cathedral, a walkable shopping street, a brewery and the German farm route along the RS-471 toward Sinimbu. It works as a one-night break on the drive between Porto Alegre and the serras, not as a destination on its own.

Get around
The centre is small and flat: walk Rua Marechal Floriano and the streets around Praça Getúlio Vargas. Taxis and app cars cover the cathedral, the lake and the circuit. For the Rio Pardinho German route and Sinimbu you need a car. Intercity buses run to Porto Alegre from the rodoviária.
