Santa Clarita is a suburban city of about 230,000 in the Santa Clarita Valley, 35 mi (56 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, made up of Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus and Valencia. Almost everything a visitor does sits in one of two clusters: the Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor parks west of the I-5, and Old Town Newhall plus the Valencia Town Center mall in the centre. It is a car-first place with free parking and a small commuter rail link to LA, so it works as a two-night theme-park base or a day trip, not as a stand-alone destination.

Get around
You need a car for the parks, the wineries and Castaic Lake; the city is spread over freeway exits and sidewalks are patchy. Santa Clarita Transit buses cover the main corridors at $1 a ride (50¢ for riders over 60, free transfers) and four weekday routes (501–504) link the Metrolink stations to local stops. Bike paths and paseos connect much of the valley, and there is a large equestrian community with horse trails.

- Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor are separate tickets, and Hurricane Harbor is seasonal — check the calendar before you book.
