Sanford is a small Piedmont city of about 30,000 people, an hour's drive south of Raleigh at the junction of US 1, US 421 and US 15-501. It built its name on clay brick — in 1959 it produced about a tenth of US brick and called itself the Brick Capital — and its draw today is a compact National Register downtown, a 1925 theatre, a railroad museum, and mountain-bike trails a few minutes out. Most travellers use it as a cheap, quiet stop on the way to Pinehurst or the Triangle rather than a destination in itself.
