Sandwell
Skip Sandwell as a base unless you have a reason to be here: it is a borough of towns, not a sight, and Birmingham is 20–30 min away by train.
Sandwell is a metropolitan borough west of Birmingham made up of towns — West Bromwich, Smethwick, Oldbury, Tipton, Wednesbury, Rowley Regis, Cradley Heath and Bearwood. There is no single centre and no headline sight. What it does have is the Sandwell Valley country park and RSPB reserve, the West Midlands Metro through West Bromwich and Wednesbury, a canal network at Tipton, and the 2022 Commonwealth Games aquatics centre at Smethwick. Most travellers pass through on the M5 or use it as a cheaper bed for Birmingham.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No single town centre: plan each stop by bus, tram or train or you will spend the day waiting.
- Some pubs and late-night streets around Bearwood and West Bromwich get rough at weekends; keep to lit main roads.
- Pay-and-display parking and bus fares are cashless in places: carry a contactless card.
- Canal towpaths at Tipton are uneven and unlit in stretches; go in daylight.
Sandwell is an ordinary West Midlands borough: daytime streets and parks are fine, but some residential and pub areas are rowdy late on weekends. Use main roads, keep valuables out of sight and take a licensed taxi after dark.
