Sandown and Shanklin
Base here 2 nights for the sandy bay and Shanklin Chine; skip if you want quiet — it is a family seaside resort, busiest in August.
Sandown and Shanklin sit on the same bay on the Isle of Wight's southeast coast, joined by a long sandy beach and the Island Line railway. Sandown is the flatter, more traditional resort with the zoo and dinosaur museum; Shanklin has the Chine, the thatched Old Village and the better eating. Two nights covers both; most people arrive by train from Ryde or by bus from Newport.

Get around
The Island Line train links Sandown and Shanklin with Ryde in about 15–20 min. Southern Vectis buses run between the two towns and on to Newport via Godshill. In summer a hop-on hop-off 'land train' bus and the Shanklin Breezer connect the seafront, stations and Old Village. The bay is walkable end to end along the promenade.
