San Ramon
Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be here: one night for Bishop Ranch Preserve or the Iron Horse Trail, then move to Danville, Pleasanton or Walnut Creek.
San Ramon is a suburban Contra Costa County city in the Interior Valleys of the East Bay, about 14 mi from Oakland airport and 18 mi from SFO. It has no downtown grid worth walking, but it sits on the Iron Horse Regional Trail and next to Bishop Ranch Preserve, so it works as a quiet, car-based stop for trail riders and business travellers rather than a sightseeing base.

- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- No BART station in San Ramon: budget a bus or taxi leg to Dublin/Pleasanton or Walnut Creek.
- Summer afternoons inland run hot; carry water on the Iron Horse Trail.
- Suburban roads have fast traffic and few crossings: use marked intersections.
- Hotel rates spike during Bishop Ranch business events: book ahead or shift dates.
Low-crime suburban city; the real risks are fast traffic on arterials, heat on inland trails and wildfire smoke days in late summer and autumn. Check air quality before a long ride or hike.
