Voykit pocket guide · United States
San Rafael
Base here 1–2 nights only if you want Marin's hills, China Camp and a Mission; otherwise it is a 30-min stop between San Francisco and the wine country.
San Rafael is Marin County's county seat and its cultural centre, 30–40 minutes north of San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge on US-101. It has one of California's 21 Spanish missions, a Frank Lloyd Wright civic centre, a walkable 4th Street downtown and a state park on the bay. Most travellers use it as a base for Marin, not as a destination in itself.

Marin Transit buses and the SMART train (two stations: downtown Transit Center and Civic Center) cover the rest of the county.
