San Pedro de Atacama
Give San Pedro 3–4 nights: one full day for Valle de la Luna, one pre-dawn El Tatio run, one altiplano-lagoon day. Fewer nights and you skip one of the three.
San Pedro is a 5,000-person oasis town at 2,400 m and the base for the Los Flamencos National Reserve: salt flats, geysers, altiplano lakes and some of the clearest night skies on earth. Everything worth seeing sits 8–100 km outside town, so you book tours or a car, not a city itinerary. It is one of Chile's three most popular destinations and priced like it.

Get around
The centre is walkable; everything else is not. Book tours through the town's many agencies, or rent a car in Calama or San Pedro — a car is often cheaper per group and lets you hit sights before the vans. Bicycles rent by the half-day for Valle de la Luna, Valle de Marte and Pukará de Quitor; riding in the centre is banned.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: town is 2,400 m, El Tatio 4,200 m and the altiplano lakes over 4,200 m. Arrive, sleep, then go high — and read up on altitude sickness before you book the geyser tour.
- El Tatio tours leave around 04:00 and it is below freezing before sunrise even in summer: gloves, hat, two pairs of socks, warm jacket.
- Valle de la Luna tickets are sold online only — no ticket booth at the gate, and you are turned away without one. Buy before you go.
- Fuel: the only station in the area is in San Pedro. Fill up before any drive, and check the spare tyre — flats are common on dirt roads.
- Off the main tour roads there is no phone signal and traffic may be one car every two months. Do not drive remote altiplano tracks alone.
- If you continue to Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni, several sights repeat. Decide which geysers, lagoons and salt flats you pay for once.
San Pedro is a small, safe tourist town; the real risks are altitude, cold, heat and desert driving. Do not drive remote altiplano tracks alone, and treat any agency's oxygen bottle claim with suspicion.
