San Juan de los Lagos
A half-day or full-day stop for the cathedral and plaster-saint shopping; skip if you are not interested in religious pilgrimage or craft markets.
San Juan de los Lagos is a pilgrimage town in Jalisco, 2 hours east of Guadalajara. Its main draw is the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin, a destination for thousands of walkers each January. Outside the peak pilgrimage month, the town is quiet and can be seen in a few hours: the cathedral, the Capilla Del Pocito, and the plaster-saint shops. Most travellers use it as a day trip from Guadalajara, León or Guanajuato.
