Best day trips from San Juan: how to get there and what to see

Distances and times below are approximate and should be treated as planning bands, not confirmed figures — check current road and bus information before you commit. Times assume a car and normal traffic; buses take longer because of stops.

Barreal sits in the Calingasta valley west of the city, reached by Ruta 149 over the mountains. It is the longest of the realistic day trips: leave San Juan early, spend the middle of the day in the valley, and expect to be back after dark. The area is known for its clear night sky and for the flat, wind-scoured plain used for land sailing, but a day trip only scratches the surface. If you want the night sky properly, stay overnight instead.

San José de Jáchal is the practical choice without a car, provided buses are running. Long-distance buses leave from San Juan's terminal and the trip is short enough to leave in the morning and return in the afternoon, but schedules change, so confirm both directions before you go. The town has colonial-era churches and a museum, and the surrounding valley has smaller villages. Check return bus times when you arrive, because the last departure can be early.

Villa Unión and the Rodeo area lie further south in the same valley system and are better as an overnight than a rushed day. Ullum and the Quebrada de Zonda are close enough for a half day: the reservoir, the small dam and short walks in the gorge, all within about an hour of the city.

Prices are 2026 estimates and move with inflation, so treat every figure below as a band to check, not a quote. Car hire in San Juan is usually the biggest single cost; fuel is comparatively cheap but the distances are long. Organised tours bundle transport and a guide, which is often better value for one or two people than hiring a car.

Bus tickets to Jáchal are the cheapest option. Taxis and remis are fine for Ullum and Zonda but not for the western valleys, where the fare would be far higher than a day's car hire.
