Before you start
Welcome to the Downtown and Plaza de la Cultura audio walk in San José. 3 stops: Teatro Nacional, Museo del Oro Precolombino and Mercado Central. Morning cluster: the national theatre, the gold museum and the central market within a few blocks; be done by 13:00 and off the streets by 17:30.
Teatro Nacional and Plaza de la Cultura west to the Mercado Central, the pedestrian core only. Underfoot: paved, busy pavements; slope: flat; shade: low.
San José is the small, high-altitude capital of a country famous for its rainforests, and most visitors pass through it in a day. That is a fair use of the city, but it hides a compact story: coffee money built an opera house and a grid of heritage streets, a short civil war ended with the abolition of the army, and a market and a row of sodas still feed the people who work downtown.
Before you start: Watch bags and phones in the market and on crowded pavements. After 17:30 downtown empties: leave by car. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Teatro Nacional
Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica
Look for
- Lobby and painted ceiling
- Foyer and Salón Dorado
- Main hall (Sala Principal)
Stop 1 of 3: Teatro Nacional. Locally, Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica. Arrival point: Plaza de la Cultura, Avenida 2.
The 1897 opera house on Plaza de la Cultura: worth a 30-minute look inside and a coffee in its café; go in the morning.
Look for Lobby and painted ceiling: Allegorical ceiling painting, marble stairs. Look for Foyer and Salón Dorado: Gilded rooms for interval drinks and concerts. Look for Main hall (Sala Principal): Horseshoe boxes and painted ceiling; open when there is no rehearsal.
The pedestrian street of Avenida Central runs for about a kilometre through the middle of the city, and within ten minutes of the Plaza de la Cultura you can reach the Teatro Nacional, the Gold Museum under the plaza and the Mercado Central. The showpiece is the Teatro Nacional. The Gold Museum plus the Teatro Nacional make a good morning; the National Museum plus a walk through Barrio Amón make another.
Follow staff instructions during tours and rehearsals. Quiet in the morning; tours and events change the timing. Allowed in public areas unless a sign says no; no flash during shows.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Museo del Oro Precolombino. It's about 1 minute on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Museo del Oro Precolombino
Look for
- Gold gallery
- Numismatic collection
- Temporary exhibition
- Museum café
- Gold gallery cases
- Plaza entrance
Stop 2 of 3: Museo del Oro Precolombino. Arrival point: Plaza de la Cultura (entrance below the plaza).
A pre-Columbian gold museum under Plaza de la Cultura: 60–90 minutes, indoors and dry. On a first visit: The best short museum in the centre.
Look for Gold gallery: Animal figures, ornaments and burial goods from before the Spanish arrival. Look for Numismatic collection: Costa Rican coins and banknotes. Look for Temporary exhibition: Changes; check the programme. Look for Museum café: Coffee and snacks (check). For a photo: Gold gallery cases, any time. For a photo: Plaza entrance, morning.
Bags may be checked at the entrance. Quiet before 11:00; tour groups mid-morning. Allowed in many rooms; no flash (check signs). Tickets are about ₡5,000–8,500 for foreigners (2026 estimate, check); residents pay less. The museum is underground, so it stays cool and dry: a good place to wait out a shower. Photography rules vary by room: look for the signs.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Mercado Central. It's about 7 minutes on foot, about 450 metres to the north-west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Mercado Central
Look for
- Main lane and coffee stalls
- Soda counters
- Craft and leather stalls
- Market lane
- Coffee sacks
Stop 3 of 3: Mercado Central. Arrival point: Avenida Central between Calles 6 and 8.
The old covered market with sodas, coffee and crafts: 30 minutes and a cheap lunch; watch your bag. On a first visit: Best paired with a museum.
Look for Main lane and coffee stalls: Coffee beans, spices, hats and hammocks. Look for Soda counters: Casado, soup and fresh juice at counter stools. Look for Craft and leather stalls: Souvenirs; compare prices. For a photo: Market lane, 08:30–10:00. For a photo: Coffee sacks, any time.
The Mercado Central and the streets around La Sabana are good places to try them.
Keep bags closed and in front of you. Busiest around noon; calmer at 09:00–10:30. Ask before photographing vendors. Most stalls take cash only; carry ₡10,000 in small notes. The market opens early and thins out by mid-afternoon; go before noon. Pickpockets work the lanes: keep phones in a front pocket.
