San Jon
Skip as a base: San Jon is a 300-person Route 66 village with one motel. Stop 30–60 min off I-40, or sleep here only if Tucumcari is full.
San Jon is a near-ghost railroad and Route 66 town in Northeast New Mexico, bypassed by I-40 in 1981. Almost nothing of the old highway strip survives: a handful of services sit by exit 356 and one motel still takes guests. It works as a leg-stretch and fuel stop between Tucumcari (about 30 km west) and Glenrio on the Texas line, not as a destination.

- Main Street (old Route 66)
- The San Jon Motel is the surviving option; check availability and rates before you commit, as the village has almost no other beds.
- I-40 exit 356 services
- Truck-stop and fuel area; limited services, no real lodging cluster.
- Tucumcari (about 30 km west)
- Use Tucumcari for a proper choice of Route 66 motels, food and fuel; San Jon is a fallback, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Services are very limited: fuel and food before you arrive, especially late in the day.
- Summer afternoon heat and winter ice on I-40 can close or slow the highway.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the surrounding plains; download offline maps.
- Do not expect the old Route 66 cafés and stations to still be open: most are gone.
Low crime in a village of about 300 people; the real risks are highway driving, summer heat, winter ice and long gaps between services.
