San Gerardo de Dota
Go for 2 nights if you want to see the resplendent quetzal in the wild; skip if you only have a week in Costa Rica and prefer beaches or volcanoes.
San Gerardo de Dota is a small village in the Talamanca cloud forest, about 2.5 hours south of San José. Its main draw is the Resplendent Quetzal, which nests here from November to May. The village is a string of lodges along a steep unpaved road off the Interamericana. Two nights give you a full day for guided quetzal walks and short forest trails.
