Day trip from San Francisco to Monterey: how to get there and what to do

Monterey sits about 190 km (120 mi) south of San Francisco on the Central Coast, and the drive takes roughly 2 hours each way without traffic. That is 4–5 hours of travel for a 4–6 hour visit, which is a long day but doable if you start early.

The payoff is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, the coastal recreation trail and the historic adobe buildings around downtown. If you want to add 17-Mile Drive or Carmel-by-the-Sea, the day gets tight and you should consider staying overnight.

Skip the day trip if you are travelling with young children, if you dislike long drives, or if you want to see Big Sur as well. In those cases, book a night in Monterey or Carmel and drive back the next day.

Driving is the simplest option. Take US-101 south to CA-156 west, then CA-1 south into Monterey, or take I-280 to CA-92 to CA-1 for a slower coastal route. The coastal route is prettier but adds time and is often foggy in summer.

There is no direct train to Monterey. Amtrak's Capitol Corridor and Coast Starlight connect to Salinas or San Jose, where you transfer to a Thruway bus or local service. Total travel time is 3–4 hours each way, which makes a same-day return difficult.

Intercity buses such as FlixBus and Greyhound run from San Francisco to Salinas or Monterey, usually 2.5–3.5 hours depending on stops. Check schedules the day before; frequencies are limited.

Guided day tours leave San Francisco early and return in the evening, often including the aquarium or 17-Mile Drive. They cost more but remove the driving and parking problem.

Leave San Francisco by 7am to clear the worst of the southbound traffic. Arrive in Monterey around 9am and park near Cannery Row or the downtown garages.

Spend the morning at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (book timed tickets online in advance; entry is around US$60 for adults). Walk the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail toward Lovers Point if time allows.

Eat lunch on Cannery Row or in downtown Monterey, then spend the afternoon on the Path of History adobe walk, Fisherman's Wharf and the waterfront. If you have energy left, drive 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach (toll road, about US$12 per car) or continue 15 minutes to Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Start the return drive by 5pm to avoid the worst of the evening traffic on CA-1 and US-101. You should be back in San Francisco by 7–8pm.

A self-drive day trip for two people is usually the cheapest option: fuel for the round trip is roughly US$25–35, plus parking of US$15–30 in Monterey. Add aquarium tickets (about US$60 per adult) and lunch.

A guided day tour bundles transport and sometimes entry, typically US$120–180 per person. Bus or train plus local transport is cheaper but eats more of the day.

If you want to see the aquarium properly, walk the coastal trail and add Carmel or 17-Mile Drive, staying one or two nights is the better call. The parent California itinerary already suggests two nights in Monterey or Carmel on a longer trip.

Overnight also lets you drive down Highway 1 toward Big Sur the next morning, which is not realistic on a same-day return. Hotel prices in Monterey and Carmel are high in summer; book ahead.

If you only have one day and want a shorter trip from San Francisco, consider Muir Woods or Napa Valley instead — both are under 1.5 hours each way.
